The multi airline database is a unique resource that currently includes data from 8 studies with 4 airlines on 3 continents. All studies have used a recommended set of standard measures [1] to monitor the sleep and fatigue of long range and ultra-long range pilots on a variety of different trips. To our knowledge, this is now the largest-ever database of its type.
Combining data from different trips, it becomes possible to control statistically for the effects of operational factors (e.g., flight direction, duration, and timing), and reveal the independent effects of physiological factors such as recent sleep history and time in the circadian body clock cycle. These types of analyses not only advance scientific knowledge, but also provide guidance for regulators and airlines to improve pilot fatigue risk management.
